At Valles Caldera National Preserve, rangers guide winter snowshoeing hikes, including moonlit outings, around the likes of Cerro La Jara, one of the domes in the vast Valle Grande basin.
BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE
Enchanted Forest, near Red River, may be better known for its cross-country skiing but it also offers 15 kilometers of snowshoe trails and guided tours, with rental boots, snowshoes, and trekking poles available.
INTERMEDIATE
The Sandía Mountains trail system hosts some great snowshoeing, including some of Michelle Hummel’s go-to training routes. She enjoys looping together the Buried Cable, Switchback, and Crest trails—a roughly 3-mile route.

In the Santa Fe National Forest, the 6-mile Aspen Vista Trail ramps up slowly from its trailhead through aspen groves that the sun sifts through. The slow, steady climb below the Santa Fe Ski Basin makes for an even pace.
