One of Our 50 Is Missing: September 2026

AI BS
Retired University of New Mexico radiology and nuclear medicine professor MICHAEL HARTSHORNE discovered a U.S. News profile claiming he earned his medical degree from a university in Mexico City instead of UNM. He suspects an “AI hallucination” and posits that One of Our 50 Is Missing has entered its artificial intelligence era.

BAD ADVICE
While planning a Santa Fe staycation for her wedding anniversary, REYNA TRUJILLO found a Bon Traveler blog advising City Different visitors to buy an international eSIM and not to “leave the country without first obtaining travel insurance.” “Maybe she’s an adept traveler,” Trujillo says of the California-based blogger, “but certainly pathetically misinformed” about New Mexico.

REROUTED
Albuquerque resident KURT HEDIN was admiring a Washington state car museum’s Route 66 exhibition when he spotted a wrong turn. A map placed La Bajada Hill in Arizona, even as the caption described the famous grade as “near Santa Fe,” where “steep hairpin turns inspired many motorists to hire locals to drive their cars up the road.” He alerted museum staff, who promised to fix it. Turns out, even Route 66 can lose its way.
