1 See recycling as an art form.
A new exhibition opening Friday at Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque, The Art of ReUse, shines a light on sustainability in art, design, and fashion. Curated by Jakia Fuller, the group show explores how previously used materials can be repurposed into new and beautiful works of art. Artists include Kailani Mayer, who makes lingerie for her brand Maman Atelier; Parron Allen, a Brooklyn-based fashion designer; and Shawn Holtaway Keller of Scattered Light Stitchery. The Art of ReUse also features a fashion show showcasing designs made from recycled materials by designers such as the Son of Picasso, Alex Vigil, and Ashlyn Perry on January 24, along with a workshop focused on clothes mending on January 31. A pop-up boutique allows attendees to shops works by featured designers throughout the run of the exhibition. See the show through February 14.
2 Listen to a renowned artist speak.
Diné and Chicana artist Nani Chacon delves into her beliefs about art as a catalyst for meaningful change and discusses the ethos behind her public works, which include murals, illustrations, and sculptures, during a free talk at Albuquerque Museum on Saturday at 2 p.m. As the museum’s current Visiting Artist, Chacon has an installation on display in the lobby titled Erase the Horse… .
3 Hear about mapping from an Indigenous curator.
SITE Santa Fe and the Institute of American Indian Arts present the Indigenous Knowledge Systems conversation series, a collaborative project featuring talks on arts-related topics and developments. On Friday, curator Maya Wilson-Sánchez takes the SITE Santa Fe stage at 5:30 p.m. to discuss mapping in a lecture titled “The Grid and the Water: Anishinaabe Mapping in the work of Bonnie Devine and Michael Belmore.” Born in Ecuador, Wilson-Sánchez has an extensive list of accolades that includes a recent show, I Am Land, in Toronto. 4 Learn the story of White Sands.
On Friday, take a special guided tour to Lake Lucero, a dry lake in White Sands National Park that was essential for the formation of the white dunes. The three-hour hike, rated moderate, starts at 10 a.m. and takes participants to a site strewn with thousands of selenite crystals. Along the way, rangers discuss the geologic history of the park. Meet at the Small Missile Range Gate and caravan with rangers to the trailhead.
5 Catch a one-woman show.
Once called the most dangerous woman in America, Irish labor activist Mother Jones (a major figure in the fight to end to child labor) is the subject of Mother Jones in Heaven, a one-woman musical by Si Kahn, coming to Silver City this weekend. It stars Vivian Nesbitt, who TV fans may recognize from roles in Breaking Bad and Longmire. She is joined by musician John Dillon, who accompanies her throughout the play. Catch it at the Western New Mexico University’s Light Hall Theater on Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m.
