There comes a point on every long trek down a country road when the sun is fully out and dehydration feels imminent. Then a roadside farm stand will appear like a hallowed mirage. They’re usually pretty humble, with hand-painted signs and elders posted up on their porches waiting for the next driver in need of apples, cherries, apricots, or melons, depending on the season. Many sell much more than fruit, though. Go in practically any direction and the farm-stand menu could include green chile, dried red chile, bunches of flowers, fresh eggs, jams, and everything else you didn’t know you needed.
