THIRTY-ONE YEARS AFTER Edward Abbey’s death, his legacy as one of the godparents of Southwestern environmentalism lives on. Wrenched from the Land: Activists Inspired by Edward Abbey (UNM Press, 2020) collects documentarian ML Lincoln’s interviews with the likes of Terry Tempest Williams, Dave Foreman, Shonto Begay, and Jack Loeffler. Together, they build a portrait of a complicated man whose essays and novels galvanized a movement that was alternately reviled and revered. That his cohorts still raise a necessary ruckus gives readers hope for a planet as threatened as it was during Hayduke’s heyday.
