Mac’s Steak in the Rough is a retro drive-in on Albuquerque’s Menaul Boulevard where a big, icy cup of old-fashioned limeade will quench your thirst and curl your toes for less than two bucks. Open since 1960, Mac’s recently had a cheery renovation, but the trademarked Taquita Tusum (their version of the taquito) and old-fashioned limeade are just as good as I remember from when I was a carhop there in the mid-1990s.
Order This: Cherry limeade, with a shot of bright red syrup and a maraschino cherry.
My stint chauffeuring trays of deep-fried steak fingers was brief, but it left me with an enduring taste for this Mac’s classic drink.
On a hot Burque day, I bet you get hooked, too.
