THE NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR always brings in top-notch headliners. This year is no different, with performances from Wynonna Judd, Cypress Hill, Grupo Marca Registrada, and Clay Walker. But the fair also showcases New Mexico’s rich musical talent. Here are three local acts you don’t want to miss.

Dzaki Sukarno. Hailing from Las Cruces, the rising country star has “almost a George Jones kind of feel, but with a modern twist,” says Dan Mourning, general manager of Expo New Mexico. “This guy is phenomenal.”

Al Hurricane Jr. and Darren Cordova. The New Mexico icons team up for a special performance of ranchero and Nuevomexicano music. “This music has a fan base that’s unbelievable,” Mourning says. “We’re really proud of the history of Al Hurricane Sr. and his son.”

Def-i. Born and raised in Albuquerque, the Diné hip-hop MC and producer returns as part of the first-time Soundwave NM music festival. “I think my lyrics have a lot of good messages that could resonate with anybody,” he says.

The music is just part of the fun. See the full guide to the fair.
