When Las Cruces resident RON CAVILL checked into the Hampton Inn Santa Fe, he had to double-check his locale. Behind the desk, a sign welcomed guests to “The Cactus State.” In his room, a painting featured a saguaro cactus and a camper van bearing an Arizona license plate and an “Explore Flagstaff, Arizona” bumper sticker. “We drove downtown to be sure nobody had stolen the Roundhouse!” he says.

DESTINATION UNKNOWN
While reading the Rivereast News Bulletin in Connecticut, PAUL and ANNE RAPO spotted a geographic head-scratcher. The paper’s “Where in the World Is the Rivereast?” column asks readers to submit photos with the newspaper taken on their travels. One participant was pictured in Biloxi, Mississippi, “before continuing on to Cozumel, N.M.” The Rapos, who have made more than a hundred trips to New Mexico, suspect the real destination is farther south.

RETURN ADDRESS
When OSCAR DURÁN relocated from Albuquerque to Cleveland, he hired two men to unload his moving truck. After learning he had moved from New Mexico, they smiled and said, “Welcome back to the United States!” It’s like he never left.
