FOUR-LEGGED FLUB
Albuquerque resident SABRINA DENNING grew up in Germany. She still reads the German magazine Bunte, where she saw an article on Disney’s 2019 live-action Lady and the Tramp remake. The star of the film is a terrier mix named Monte, the article says, a street dog who was rescued from a shelter in “the Mexican city of New Mexico.” The titular Tramp actually hails from Las Cruces, but Denning isn’t surprised by the mix-up. She says her German friends know Albuquerque from Breaking Bad, which is, they think, “somewhere in California, close to Hollywood.”
GAME OVER
Santa Fe’s SUSAN DONOVAN enjoys playing the popular New York Times online word game Spelling Bee. But when she identified the word “chile” hidden within the game’s signature honeycomb pattern, an error message replied: “Not in word list.” Donovan protests, “Someone needs to speak to the Times about this New Mexico staple!” Here’s what we’re wondering: Could this be a reason why confidence in the media is reportedly at an all-time low?
PARADISE LOST
On a recent trip to Hawaii, FRED GOODRICH of Las Cruces noticed New Mexico’s own Gruet sparkling wine at the Pour House Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar in Maui—but it was listed as a brut from California. “Not only is one of our states missing,” Goodrich muses, “it would appear that one of our wineries has gone missing as well.”
DONKEY EXPRESS
When JOE MONTOYA told another soldier at Fort Lewis (Washington) that he’s from New Mexico, the man asked: “Do they still deliver mail on burros over there?” Montana lied, “Yes, they do.”
