BUT WHAT IF WE ORDER MARGARITAS?
Santa Fe resident Rebecca Eckman was traveling around the East Coast with her husband while visiting family when they popped into a Philadelphia establishment for a drink. The bartender asked to see their IDs. No problem, they thought, and whipped out New Mexico driver’s licenses. The bartender paused, seemingly confused. He was happy to serve them, he eventually said, but he needed to warn them that they couldn’t pay for their drinks with pesos.
MILES—AND MILES—OF TEXAS
This past June, the 144th Session of the New Mexico Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church was held in Albuquerque. During the event, Albuquerque’s Asbury United Methodist Church was honored as one of the top 10 giving churches within the New Mexico conference. But the award, given by the Methodist Children’s Home, in Waco, Texas, bore this inscription: Asbury United Methodist Church of Albuquerque, Texas. The next Sunday, says Mary Hunt Webb, a conference representative showed the plaque to the church’s congregation. “Everyone just laughed,” she says.
MAP-BREAKING QUAKE
Ross Collord of Rio Rancho was startled this summer while reading an article about a California earthquake. The story included a map produced by the U.S. Geological Survey that showed New Mexico in the spot usually taken by Arizona, which makes the Grand Canyon State missing. But the map also spelled our name “New Mexixo.” Either way, we’re lost.
