WHEN IN ROAM
Several years ago, JUSTIN MORRIS received an unusually high cell phone bill, so he called his carrier. “Did you travel last month?” the representative asked. “I did spend some time in New Mexico,” Morris said. “Oh,” the rep replied knowingly. “Then I’ll bet it’s the international roaming fee.”
MONEY WOES
At an Arkansas gas station, a clerk asked MARY GALLEGOS MARTINEZ where she was traveling from. “New Mexico,” she said. “Well, we only take American money,” they replied. Hopefully, the laughs were enough to fuel her trip.
RETURN TO SENDER
When longtime New Mexico Magazine subscriber MARGARET CHINKES passed away last December, her husband, Joel, called our office to cancel her subscription. He was told a refund check was in the mail, but it never arrived. “You mailed the refund to Columbus, Ohio, instead of to Columbus, New Mexico—where you had been sending our magazines for decades,” he explains. Joel, our deepest condolences on your loss. We hope Margaret would appreciate the irony of our mistake.
SPACED OUT
As of mid-July, two NASA astronauts had spent a month “stuck” at the International Space Station after their Boeing Starliner spacecraft encountered mechanical problems. To make matters worse, Pinos Altos resident CARL LEVI noticed a critical error with the crew’s proposed return flight plan, as reported by Spain’s Diario AS news. “According to the writer, the astronauts will ‘touch down in the desert of Utah, New Mexico,’ ” Levi says. By now, we hope they’ve landed safely … somewhere that exists.
