DALE DAVIS IS AN ADRENALINE JUNKIE. So imagine the rush when the former BMX racer and his wife, Rhonda Davis, took the entrepreneurial leap by purchasing 505 Cycles in Farmington in 2018. “I was a terrible mountain biker,” he recalls of his early days on the trails. “I crashed a lot.” The business side has been more successful. The Main Street shop offers bike rentals, repairs, and the city’s largest inventory of two-wheeled transportation—from electric to road bikes. After three years as chairman of endeavOR New Mexico, a nonprofit promoting outdoor-related businesses, Davis is impressed with Farmington’s emphasis on outdoor recreation.

No matter how short or long the ride, I just love the feeling of mountain biking. You can ride such diverse landscapes here—anything from what looks like you’re in Moab to riding on the moon. For the most diverse terrain, one of my favorite rides is Alien Run Trail, in Aztec. You got everything from flow to sandstone to technical work on rocks. Plus, there’s no standing in line to get on the doggone trails here!

If you want to connect fast to the mountain-biking crowd, come down to 505 Cycles around closing time. All the bikes we hang out on our patio in the morning have to come back inside in the evening. Our customers show up to help us bring bikes inside. We just have amazing customers. Of course, it does help that we give them a beer for their help.
