POKE AROUND TERI’S SWEET GARDEN candy shop in Los Lunas and you’ll find dark chocolate fudge, old-fashioned peanut brittle, and jars filled with … pickles? In a candy shop? You betcha! “As a kid in Albuquerque, I would go to the candy store and they always had glass jars of pickles,” says co-owner Teri Leahigh. “It seemed normal to me.” So when Leahigh and her husband, Mark, opened Teri’s Sweet Garden in 2010, she demanded that pickles be part of the handmade offerings. “Of course he laughed at me,” she says. No one’s laughing now. After officially adding their Wild West Pickles line to the candy store in 2019, the gourmet dill pickles have garnered numerous Scovie Awards at the annual National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show in Albuquerque. Inventive and aptly named flavors include the Outlaw Green Chile, the Gunslinger Red Chile, and the Bandit Ghost Chile. “We bring the flavors of New Mexico to the beloved snack of pickles,” Leahigh says.
